A dark storm is passing

by Tom Eykemans

I bought this painting by Abraham Murley at the UW School of Art student art sale in 2014, I think. I remember flipping through boxes of photos and prints and paintings with a close friend among a crowd of strangers. This piece caught my eye because I am a sucker for dramatic clouds, and the deep tones and textures of the heavily-applied paint lend it an unexpected gravity. It continues to catch my eye now as a reminder of a time when crowds flipping through art at a school was unremarkable, and because the rose-tinted colors of clouds at sunset hint that a dark storm is passing and better days are ahead.

—Tom Eykemans

A variety of framed paintings and an old typesetter case with little objects hang on a wall above a chest of drawers with house plants, small sculptures and a bird-shaped lamp on top.
This is the wall behind me in all video calls.⁣
A seascape painting in an old-fashioned wood frame depicting a dramatic cloud-heavy sky with light breaking through.
This piece catches my eye daily.⁣

Tom Eykemans is Design Director at Lucia | Marquand, an art book producer in Seattle, founder of Tome Press, and co-organizer of the postponed Seattle Art Book Fair.
